“Suffice to say that I was already quivering with rage when the second WBW “model” suggested that letting trans women attend Michfest would let any man in a dress come here and rape their children. Our advocate gave an I-hear-where-your-fears-are-coming-from-but-politely-disagree type response, and I was done. After the hug, I asked our advocate for a word in private, and I let it all out.”

”I mean, it was only two weeks ago when almost every white person I knew was tweeting about stopping a brutal African warlord from killing more innocent children. And they even took thirty minutes out of their busy schedules to watch a movie about dude. They bought t-shirts. Some bracelets. Even tweeted at Rihanna to take a stance. But, a 17 year old American kid is followed and then ultimately killed by a neighborhood vigilante who happens to be carrying a semi-automatic weapon and my white friends are quiet. Eerily quiet. Not even a trending topic for the young man.

KONY2012 supporters can agree that a Black man in a foreign country is the “most evil” and needs to die, but can’t possibly be bothered to lift a finger for a young Black boy who’s life was taken away from him by a truly evil white man.

Today, the Massachusetts Legislature voted to pass the Transgender Equal Rights Bill. The bill adds protections to the state’s civil rights laws against discrimination in employment, housing, education, and credit based on gender identity or expression and adds gender identity and expression to the state’s hate crimes law. This is awesome.
Let’s also keep in mind the fight is never over. Public accommodations was stripped from the bill. Public accommodations subject to legal analysis can mean,
- Government-owned/operated facilities, services, and buildings
- Privately-owned/operated businesses, services, and buildings
“Government-owned/operated facilities and services. Government-owned facilities include courthouses, jails, hospitals, parks, and other places owned and operated by federal, state and local government. Government-operated services, programs, or activities provided by federal, state, or local governments include transportation systems and government benefits programs (such as welfare assistance).
Privately-owned/operated businesses and buildings. Privately-owned businesses and facilities that offer certain goods or services to the public — including food, lodging, gasoline, and entertainment — are considered public accommodations for purposes of federal and state anti-discrimination laws. For purposes of disability discrimination, the definition of a “public accommodation” is even more broad, encompassing most businesses that are open to the public (regardless of type).”
“During the trial, McInerney’s attorneys presented what prosecutors called a “gay panic” defense, arguing that the teenager was driven to violence by King’s repeated sexual taunts.”
“After the mistrial was declared and jurors left the room, McInerney turned and smiled at his family. When he spotted his former girlfriend, Samantha Cline, sitting in a back row, he threw her a kiss.
And then he was taken away by sheriff’s deputies.”
